2004-06 California
This was a VBT cycling tour through the California wine country. Took the digital instead of the SLR this time because it was more convenient. The week was a blast and the tour is highly recommended. Met some really excellent people in and out of the tour group. Big thanks to Diane and Aaron for taking good care of all of us and pointing out cool things to see and great places to eat. Totals for the week, 176 miles by bike (if the VBT cue sheets are right) and 289 miles of driving (if the Hertz receipt is right). Figuring the air miles is work for an intern.

Drive to the Silver Rose Inn and Winery in Calistoga to join the tour. Barrel tasting with J-Paul (the owner) and dinner in the cellars.

Yountville to Sonoma Valley Inn in Sonoma with an extra loop to Carneros Creek for a 42 mile ride.

A 19 mile ride from Sonoma to Kenwood, then shuttle to Madrona Manor in Healdsburg.

2006-03 Arizona
This was a Sojourn (www.gosojourn.com) cycling tour through the Sonoran desert. Great trip, interesting people. Sojourn is a new company with a lot of promise and this was only the second time they've run this tour. Signing up for a tour that I expected to be a little less polished than the last was really half the fun.

Took the Canon EOS Digital Rebel SLR with a Sigma 28-200mm lens this time. I pondered the wisdom of carrying such a heavy camera on a bike tour but I wanted more flexibility than the Canon Powershot offered and the 35mm body was out of the question because of the degredation introduced by the x-ray machines at the security checkpoints. Not a bad result overall I think but, I've clearly not yet developed a zen with this camera I found myself wishing (on several occasions) I'd brought the Minolta X-700 body instead.

But, the future lies this way ...

Thursday - Sasabe to Amado. The afternoon ride to the Amado Territory Inn is as sweet as they come.

I came for a week in the sun on a bike. I went home with a lot more. Sasabe is an example of a great human tragedy in progress right now. Read, learn, help if you can but at very least, appreciate what you have living here in America.

Friday - Smithsonian F.L. Whipple Observatory Visitor Center and Tubac. We met David Voisard here. Not only does he do some interesting metal sculptures, but he's also a right fine human and has a passion for cycling.
